Our popular professional development series is back for the third year, and this time we’re addressing challenges that all leaders face,
whether you’re an elected official or community leader.

So this year, for the first time, the Legislator Toolkit Series is OPEN TO ALL ALUMS!

Sharpen your leadership skills to navigate the hard challenges of today.

Former Speaker of the House and leadership consultant Mitzi Johnson will lead this 2-part workshop on strengthening your skills to meet the leadership challenges of today. Whether you are a state legislator or municipal leader, or community organizer, chances are you are working on bringing change, having difficult conversations, and facing disagreements. How do you navigate systems and relationships to foster good collaboration that leads to positive outcomes? Having a strong set of leadership skills will help.

Looking Under the Surface: Understanding the challenge in front of you and managing the chaos

This session explores the different approach required by the complex challenges facing leaders today, and the ways one can exercise leadership from any position in a system. Managing loss, disequilibrium, and uncertainty are inevitable and uncomfortable aspects of leadership. Learn to better read the signs of when a group of people is ready to work on a shared problem and develop skills for getting them to that point of readiness.

It’s not you. It’s the system: Understanding the system you’re in and building relationships to navigate it

In this session we’ll pull together diagnostic tools to better understand your political environment from the outside in. Understanding the less obvious factions and forces at play will help you analyze why attempts fail or succeed and take a fresh look at your leadership challenge. We’ll also look at ways to build unusual and successful coalitions to help you be more effective and bring people together in shared perspective or shared purpose.

This year’s Legislator Toolkit is open to all Emerge Vermont alums in recognition of the many leadership roles our alums hold.

This is a 2-part online series. You are strongly encouraged to attend both sessions, as Session 2 will build upon the concepts introduced in Session 1. A third, bonus session will be planned with all participants in February, after everyone has had a chance to experiment with the skills they learned in the first two sessions.

Registration fee is $50 which includes both sessions. Campaign funds can be used to pay for registration.
