Definition of Political Courage

Representative Kiah Morris was a featured workshop leader at the Black Lives Matter Sister’s Keeper Conference on August 31, 2017 in Stowe, Vermont. Rep. Morris’ workshop, entitled “Speaking our Truths: Activist-centric Political Advocacy” included a piece on what she believes defines “political courage.” Her definition:

“So for me, political courage is the ability and the willingness to push forth policies that are responsive to the people’s needs, regardless of the political consequences. You got elected in, you might get elected out. But you got work to do while you’re there. It is the ability to drive agendas that may not be popular, but are absolutely necessary. And as women, and especially as women of color, this courage must work toward the eradication of race, gender, class, and civil rights violations. That courage must be centered on social justice.”

We think Rep. Morris, a member of the inaugural Emerge Vermont Class of 2014, herself defines political courage, with her actions, policies, voice, and leadership. You can hear a brief video of her outlining poitical courage here. Thank you Kiah for your political courage!

Emerge has one goal: To increase the number of Democratic women in office who are reflective of the incredible diversity of the Democratic party by recruiting, training and providing a powerful network.
